What do you think will be done with this particular case?

I was born without one of my lateral incise rs (the tooth next to the K9s) I quess thats the right term. Anyway when I was 13 they put braces on to close the gap. Im not sure why they did this since i have one of my laterals and it doesnt seem it would make sense having one on one side than having a bigger tooth on the other side. Anyway, after they took the braces off over the years my retainer went missing and i never got another one (not sure why, i was young, 24 now). Now the gap has reopened, its only about a centimeter apart if that. So what should I do to fix it. My little sister got an implant cause she had the same problem. But if I do that wont they have to make the gap larger to put it there, if not should I just get it closed again and reshape my teeth to make it look right. I will be getting a consultation but not for a while and wanted to know any opinions. thanks.
