What time of year is harvest and wheat growing season in rural Kansas?

In a few years I'll be travelling throughout the US for 6 months and for roughly a week I'd like to travel the countryside of Kansas. I would like to see that typical American scene of swaying fields of wheat and was just wondering when harvest is and through what months you'd find the fields full of wheat. Also does wheat change from green stalks to brown? Thanks for your time.
