How do you defrost meat in the microwave without cooking it? The wife always does but I cant figure it out?

everytime I try it the hamburger looks all brown and greasy and yucky and it is still frozen as a rock in the center. When the wife does it looks like regular uncooked hamburger. Know I know Im dumb but how can I screw up hitting ons on the freaking microwave? There has to be a trick I dont know... Please share
