How do I get a background check on myself?

I recently graduated from college and am trying to get into either teaching or possibly the fire department. They both do background checks. I've been arrested once or twice in the past and wanted to see exactly what is on my record. I know there's a million websites out there that will provide background checks if you pay but I want to know what will be the closest to the one the fire department or a school district would do? Also, is it something I can just do at the local courthouse?
